Why are women afraid to Strength Train?
63
When you think of someone who trains with weights what do you think off?
If it is the image of a women with huge muscles (a female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger) then this hub is directed at you.
This is the stereotypical view many women take when they consider strength training. However they could not be further from the truth. The women you imagine are usually taking a cocktail of anabolic steroids to get to that size. In fact it is almost impossible for women to "bulk up" from strength training because they do not have sufficient hormones (testosterone) within their body to achieve this increased size.
So now we have that out of the way I am going to discuss the benefits of strength training for women. There are many so I am just going to list them:
1. Firstly one of the main reasons for many women. Strength Training actually builds lean muscle tissue which in turn increases the amount of calories the body can burn. In truth more calories burnt the greater the fat loss.
2. It can increase and restore bone density, therefore preventing osteoporosis (very common in women).
3. It can improve flexibility, mobility and balance.
4. Can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
5. Strengthens muscles and joints, therefore reducing injuries.
6. Finally increased strength and power will actually result in better mobility and quality of life when older.
I hope this encourages more women to add strength training to their weekly fitness routines. It does not even have to be anything too complicated it can begin with bodyweight exercises and progress up to free weights.

I remember when I used to train women clients. They would all say the same thing right up front: "I don't want to get huge like Arnold". Great hub. Very informative.
Yep. Thats why we don't; most women don't realize that won't happen. That said.. it can still look like shite when a woman has too much definition, but isn't pumped up. Take Madonna, for example. When she first developed her upper arms, people were like, yeah, I want that.
She has since gone overboard, though, and the trends have followed her lead. It's too much, its not feminine, and its not sexy. The girl you have in that photo is the max -- anything past that is masculine and if we wanted to look like men, we'd stuff socks down our knickers.
You convinced me :)
iN my opinion women looks nice without bulky like Schwarzenegger
I heard strength training can be done without weights, but with elastic bands, I think thats called resistance training right?, I have seen the positive results from yoga, pilates and power90. More woman should add diversity in their workouts, that way they can tone, their bodies and increase stamina, without resorting to the harmful side effects of plastic surgery. Great hub. Thanks!
I just purchased the Total Gym (yes, Chuck Norris). Since I've gained a little weight over the past year I have noticed my boobs are looking awesome...so I don't want to lose that but I think it's inevitable.
I decided on the Total Gym because it requires the user utilizes body weight for resistence only. I don't want to get bulky.
Great Hub! Rated it up and useful!
I agree with Isabell Snow - there is moderation needed. A little bit goes a long way with both men and women. Madonna's tone upper arms and Michelle Obama are just right. The muscle queens are not attractive. Today there are so many great programs - as Research Analyst detailed the resistance bands can do allot - add the stability ball and poster and your fitness routine can be very efficient.
I pray that someday hospitals incorporate fitness in every patients' stay. For many it may be nominal movement. The hospitals have categorized it as PT - it needs to be part of normal daily routine.

Women need to do strendth training. They think they're going to get big and bulky. But, they don't have enough testosterone, like men, to get huge muscles.
Thanks for writing on this topic.
