We all know the hype surrounding certain health supplements only to find out that after you have forked out a fortune that it has no effect. Well the new supplement on the scene with regards to health and fitness is Beta Alanine.
So what is it? Well it is a non essential amino acid found naturally in the body and food. There's the first good point, its natural so no worrying about unnatural chemicals in the body. By increasing the amount of Beta Alanine you consume you will increase the intramuscular stores of carnosine, which in turn allows you to perform more exercise than before.
To be honest not a great deal of research has been performed on this substance , i.e. in terms of number of studies in other substances such as creatine etc. However what has been performed has been very interesting and it may be well worth trying this out.
The main areas that Beta Alanine improves is that it increases endurance of the muscle. This means that you fatigue later into an exercise. A recent study found it also increased endurance ability and fatigue resistance in older adults. Allowing them to perform more work and making their daily tasks easier to complete.
This increased endurance and work capacity could have a double benefit in that it will alow you to perform a greater amount of work at a higher intensity thus should increase lean muscle mass and decrease body fat. Now who does not want that from their training.
Studies have typically used multiple doses of 400 mg to 800 mg, administered at regular intervals for a period up to eight hours. These studies usually last in the range of 4 to 10 weeks. After this it would be advisable to come of the supplement for 4-6 weeks before starting the routine again.
